UNIVERSITY STUDENT ADMISSION SYSTEM WITH DECISION SUPPORT

ABSTRACT

Students’ program study in universities has an important impact on future career paths. The research aimed to provide a recommendation system with decision support for students who were admitted by Huainan Normal University in science and engineering to select the appropriate program to study. The system takes fuzzy logic algorithm as its core to mimic the work of a university advisor who can provide a personalized and suitable recommendation to students based on their academic and personal profiles. The researcher got data from a research sample of 600 science and engineering students from Huainan Normal University who volunteered to take part in the process of system development, whose professional performance ranks in the top 50 in their professional rankings. Participants’ college entrance examination scores in subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, and their personality type according to MBTI personality type test were raw data. Before these data entered the algorithm, they need to be processed. For the students’ academic performance data processing, after the selected high school subjects mapped with science and engineering programs, the weighted average was used to calculate the academic score for each science and engineering program per student. For the students’ personality type data processing, the science and engineering program distribution over the 16 personality types of the MBTI Test was obtained. Then these processed data were used as inputs for the fuzzy logic system of CEERS. Meanwhile, membership functions for input data and system output were also established. The fuzzy-logic output is a sorted list of recommended choices of study program among which the student can choose from. The top ranked program is the most recommended. The questionnaire analysis results of IT experts showed that the developed system complied with the ISO 25010 software quality standards to a “very great extent”.
