THE STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT IN PROBLEM- BASED LEARNING (PBL) AND LEVEL OF SKILLS IN OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY AT DONGGUAN POLYTECHNIC

ABSTRACT

This study explores the relationship between student engagement in Problem based Learning (PBL) and their academic performance in the Obstetrics and Gynecology course at Dongguan Polytechnic. By combining quantitative and qualitative research methods, this study focuses on assessing the extent of engagement of the participants in problem based learning in Obstetrics and Gynecology, participants’ level of skills in Obstetrics and Gynecology and problems and challenges are encountered by the participants in the PBL at Dongguan Polytechnic. The research results show that students’ engagement in PBL in Obstetrics and Gynecology is great extent. The participants’ level of skills in Obstetrics and Gynecology is high. Moreover, there is a significant positive correlation between student participation in problem based learning and academic performance in the Obstetrics and Gynecology course at Dongguan Polytechnic. Problems such as lack of independent learning ability, lack of teamwork ability, and lack of critical-thinking skills were identified. It is recommended to further promote and apply PBL teaching methods in medical education to improve students’ learning outcomes and cultivate their comprehensive abilities.
