ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between self-control and academic performance among students at Guangzhou Huashang College, with a specific focus on self-control factors, including academic attention and perseverance. It seeks to address the challenges students face in maintaining self-control and proposes an action plan to enhance their academic performance. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining both quantitative and qualitative data. A total of 260 students from the Computer Science and Technology program at Guangzhou Huashang College participated in the study. Quantitative data were collected through self-report questionnaires assessing self-control and academic performance and were analyzed using a descriptive-correlational research design. Qualitative data were obtained through thematic analysis to explore students’ experiences with self-control challenges. The findings reveal a strong positive correlation between self-control and academic performance, particularly in terms of academic attention and perseverance. Students exhibiting higher self-control demonstrated better academic outcomes, including improved focus, time management, and the ability to persevere through academic challenges. This study contributes to the understanding of the influence of self-control on academic success within a Chinese educational context. Based on the findings, an action plan is proposed to enhance self-control among students, aiming to improve academic performance and reduce common challenges such as procrastination and stress during high-pressure periods. Further research is recommended to explore specific institutional interventions tailored to individual needs.
