ABSTRACT
This study aimed to analyze text intertextuality and the use of loanwords in Wei Yuan’s Haiguotuzhi using qualitative content analysis. It examined the integration of loanwords and intertextual references to highlight how Wei Yuan draws extensively from Lin Zexu’s Sizhouzhi, with explicit references to 31 chapters, implicit references to 2 chapters and allusions transforming descriptive content into strategic insights. By analyzing the classification, construction, and cultural aspects of these loanwords, the study revealed how they facilitate modernization through the adoption of European terms in areas like military, technology, and governance. This integration not only bridges linguistic and cultural divides but also underscores an intellectual openness that aligns with Wei’s reformist agenda. Moreover, the findings illustrate that the text interweaves historical, cultural, and geographic knowledge, using loanwords and intertextuality to enhance China’s comprehension of the global landscape. This interplay contributes significantly to language learning and development by fostering comprehension, contextual learning, and critical thinking, ultimately promoting cross-cultural understanding during a pivotal era of global interaction. Furthermore, considering the study’s salient findings, the researcher designed instructional plans to enhance text intertextuality and loanwords analysis in Chinese text.
