ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the teaching competence of College PE Teachers at Hengshui University with the hope of proposing some measures to improve teaching competence. It sought to investigate the profile of the participants when grouped according to their profile variables, the level of competence of Physical Education teachers, the level of teaching performance of the participants, significant difference in the participants’ level of teaching performance, significant relationship between the participants’ teaching competence and teaching performance, the problems encountered in the teaching of Physical Education. The output of this study is the plan of action which can be proposed to improve teachers’ teaching competence. The participants of this study were the PE teachers in Hengshui University with a total of 79. Mixed methods of research were employed. A questionnaire and an interview guide were used in gathering the relevant data. Results show that PE teachers have high levels of general competence in all dimensions and professional competence in both professional and community engagements except for research engagement. They have qualified level for their teaching performance in all domains except for teaching reform and research. Notably, there are significant relationships between PE teachers’ teaching competence and teaching performance.
