ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the relationship between students’ learning competence and their performance in Japanese as a second language at Jiangxi University of Technology. A mixed-method research design was employed, primarily utilizing quantitative techniques. Participants included undergraduate students from various year levels who were enrolled in Japanese language courses. The findings indicated that students demonstrated a moderate to high level of learning competence. Moreover, their academic performance in Japanese was generally assessed as satisfactory. Statistical analysis revealed significant correlations between students’ learning competence and their language performance. These results underscore the importance of enhancing students’ learning strategies and support systems to improve language acquisition outcomes. Integrating competence-based approaches in language instruction may contribute to more effective learning and better academic achievement in second language education.
