ABSTRACT

This study aimed to assess the level of participation and technical abilities of students majoring in Interior Art and Design at three different higher vocational colleges in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining surveys and interviews with students and instructors to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. The results indicate that active involvement in hands-on projects, industry collaboration, and exposure to real-world scenarios significantly contribute to the improvement of students’ technical abilities. Additionally, the study highlights that students who engage in extracurricular design activities and work closely with professionals demonstrate better technical competence. The findings suggest that fostering a more practical, industry-oriented learning environment can enhance both student engagement and technical proficiency. The study concludes by recommending that vocational colleges integrate more collaborative, project-based learning opportunities and industry partnerships to better prepare students for the demands of the interior design field.
