ABSTRACT
This study aimed to assess the self-efficacy, strategies, and skills in English reading among Chinese students in the Department of Information Engineering, Guangdong Innovative Technical College, for the academic year 2023-2024. Utilizing a mixed research approach, the study combined quantitative and qualitative methods to explore participants’ level of self-efficacy, extent of utilization of the reading strategies, and reading skills level. Findings indicate moderate levels of self-efficacy across various dimensions, moderate utilization of reading strategies, and predominantly intermediate reading skills. Significant relationships were verified among participants’ level of self-efficacy, extent of utilization of the reading strategies, and reading skills level. Qualitative data revealed key challenges faced by participants in English reading, including inadequate motivation, lexical disturbances, weak textual analysis skills, lack of language environment, and insufficient learning support. The study proposed an action plan to enhance students’ self-efficacy, reading strategy utilization, and reading skills.
