ABSTRACT
The study aimed to assess and correlate the levels of self-care agency and self-compassion among Chinese nursing students. It utilized a mixed-methods research approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative research designs. A total of 301 nursing students from Jiangsu College of Nursing in Jiangsu Province, China, participated in the study. Data collection was conducted through an online survey, followed by validation of responses via online platforms. Using a commonly employed questionnaire survey method in quantitative research, the study identified the levels of self-care agency and self-compassion among Chinese nursing students based on general demographic data. It also explored the differences between these two variables across various demographic factors. Additionally, the study examined the correlation between self-care agency and self-compassion. The findings revealed significant differences in self-care agency and self-compassion based on selected demographic factors such as gender, residence, and ethnicity. Furthermore, a significant relationship was observed between self-care agency and self-compassion. Based on both quantitative and qualitative results, the study proposed a self-enhancement training program aimed at improving self-care agency and self-compassion among Chinese nursing students. The findings suggest that the self-care agency and self-compassion levels of Chinese nursing students are not particularly optimistic. Therefore, junior colleges and educators should place greater emphasis on implementing effective training programs to support students in managing the demands of their education and future careers while also preparing them to provide compassionate care to their patients.
