ABSTRACT

This study examined the journey of self-discovery in Chinese lyric poetry through a systematic analysis of self-concept and identity manifestation across different historical periods. Through qualitative analysis of ten representative poems spanning from the Wei-Jin to modern period, the research investigated how poets express material, interpersonal, and intrapersonal aspects of self through sophisticated literary devices and narrative techniques. The study developed a comprehensive analytical framework that integrated traditional Chinese philosophical thought with modern identity theory. By examining works of classical poets like Tao Yuanming, Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Bo, and Su Shi alongside modern poets such as Xu Zhimo, Shu Ting, Wang Guozhen, Xi Murong, and Yu Guangzhong, the research traced how poetic expression of self-discovery evolved from philosophical integration to psychological complexity. The findings revealed how Chinese lyric poetry serves as a sophisticated medium for identity exploration while maintaining cultural continuity. The study’s framework provided a systematic approach for analyzing self-discovery in poetry that bridges traditional and contemporary perspectives, offering insights for both literary studies and modern identity formation.
