ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the correlation between college students’ physical health and fitness and their psychological well-being. A mixed research approach employing a descriptive-correlational design and thematic analysis was utilized. Data were collected through an online survey involving 540 college students across different year levels from the School of Economics and Management at Xingyi Normal University for Nationalities, China, during the academic year 2023–2024. The results of the descriptive analysis revealed that the participants’ levels of physical health and fitness were moderate, and their level of psychological well-being was likewise moderate. Inferential analyses further indicated that year level and program of study were significant determinants of physical health and fitness, particularly in terms of body mass index. Moreover, significant positive correlations were found between physical health and fitness indicators, namely flexibility and mobility, core stability and balance, muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and speed and agility, and psychological well-being dimensions, including autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance. The study also identified several problems and challenges encountered by the participants in engaging in physical fitness activities at the university, such as time constraints, insufficient sports facilities, lack of healthy lifestyle practices, inadequate exercise knowledge, lack of confidence, and the absence of an effective feedback mechanism. Considering these findings, a plan of action was developed to enhance college students’ physical health and fitness and promote their psychological well-being.
