ABSTRACT
This study examined the human capital management (HCM) practices of colleges in Guangzhou, China and their impact on school performance. This study adopted a mixed method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods for comprehensive analysis. Using descriptive correlation research design, it explored the relationship between strategic implementation and performance. The qualitative part of the thematic analysis identified the key challenges in human capital management practices in vocational colleges. The data were collected from 365 participants, including 75% of teachers and 25% of administrators, who were selected through stratified random sampling from selected colleges. The structured questionnaire validated by experts in business management at the school and referencing previous literature is the main tool for data collection. The data analysis used frequency counting, percentages, weighted averages, t-tests, analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficients, and strictly adhered to ethical protocols throughout the entire process. The survey results show that human capital management practices have a high level of implementation in recruitment and selection, salary/compensation, employee benefits, and performance management, but a moderate level of implementation in training and development. Based on age, highest educational attainment, unit/ department, there are significant differences in the evaluation of positions and service years, and there is a statistically significant positive correlation between strategic implementation and school performance. However, the study also revealed persistent challenges, including outdated management practices, deficiencies in training and development, difficulties in recruiting teachers, market instability, and regulatory constraints. These findings provide practical insights for school administrators and policy makers, aimed at strengthening human capital management practices and enhancing the competitiveness of Chinese colleges.
