ABSTRACT

This study aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of the two classic Chinese female films Raise the Red Lantern and Woman-Demon-Human through the lens of feminist and socio-cultural analysis. It focused on the gender power relationship, female experience, and female roles within the background of male-dominated society, as well as the similarities and differences between the two films in the social culture and historical background. Results showed that both films reveal the dilemma and struggle of women in the male-dominated society and express the desire and pursuit of women’s liberation and gender equality. However, the existing research has some limitations, such as insufficient cultural background analysis, single research perspective, lack of comparative research and research materials related to film teaching. Therefore, a comparative analysis of these two films from the perspective of feminism and socio-cultural analysis is of great significance, which can provide rich teaching materials for film teaching and provide students with a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of film.
