ABSTRACT
This study examined the business risk management (BRM) strategies implemented by Guangdong Technology College and their relationship to the institution’s operational performance. In response to the increasing uncertainties faced by higher education institutions, the study aimed to assess the extent to which BRM strategies—namely risk identification, risk analysis, risk evaluation, risk treatment, risk monitoring and review, and risk communication and reporting—are implemented and how these strategies influence key operational performance indicators. These indicators include institutional governance and efficiency, teaching and learning quality, research and applied technology, student services, student and faculty satisfaction, and sustainability. A mixed-methods research approach was employed, integrating quantitative and qualitative methods to provide a comprehensive analysis of risk management practices within the institution. For the quantitative component, a descriptive–correlational research design was utilized to determine the level of implementation of BRM strategies and examine their relationship with operational performance indicators. The qualitative component used thematic analysis to explore the problems and challenges encountered by participants in implementing risk management strategies. The participants consisted of 219 teachers and administrators of Guangdong Technology College selected through random sampling. Data were collected using a structured survey questionnaire adapted from established frameworks on risk management and higher education performance evaluation. The results revealed that both the implementation of business risk management strategies and the institution’s operational performance were assessed at a moderate level. Correlation analysis further indicated that risk monitoring and review as well as risk communication and reporting had strong and significant relationships with operational performance, while other risk management dimensions showed no significant relationship. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening monitoring and communication mechanisms to enhance institutional performance and support effective risk governance in higher education institutions.
