ABSTRACT
This study examined the physical fitness levels and hard-court tennis skills of students at Zhoukou Normal University, with a focus on their interrelationship and the challenges affecting performance. Physical fitness was assessed through aerobic conditioning, strength training, and balance/stability, while tennis skills were evaluated in volley technique, overhead smash, footwork, ball control, and foundational strokes such as forehand, backhand, and serve. Findings revealed generally high fitness and skill levels, with notable proficiency in advanced techniques but moderate competence in foundational skills and mental toughness. A strong positive correlation was observed between physical fitness and tennis skills, underscoring the role of conditioning in performance enhancement. Key challenges included limited facility access, insufficient professional coaching, high equipment and training costs, and uneven skill levels among students. The study recommends improving facilities, providing structured training programs, enhancing foundational skills, and addressing financial and psychological barriers. By implementing targeted interventions, the university can foster a more inclusive, supportive, and competitive tennis environment, contributing to both athletic excellence and student well-being.
