ABSTRACT

This study investigated the level of acceptability and competence in utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in English instruction among undergraduate students at St. Paul University Philippines during the 2nd Semester of A.Y. 2024–2025. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study utilized descriptive-correlational design for the quantitative component and descriptive analysis for the qualitative part. Results revealed that students showed a high level of acceptability toward AI use, particularly in performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, and use behavior, while social influence and behavioral intention were assessed as moderate. Competence in AI use, measured in terms of skills, behavior, and attitude, was likewise high. A significant correlation was established between students’ acceptability and their competence in using AI for English instruction. The study affirms that while AI holds great promise for enriching English instruction, its implementation must be critically managed to ensure pedagogical effectiveness and ethical use.
