STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT IN TABLE TENNIS ACTIVITIES AND THEIR LEVEL OF COMPETENCE

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the students’ cognitive, affective, and behavioral engagement in table tennis activities, as well as their level of competence in table tennis in terms of knowledge, skills, and attitude. 162 table tennis elective students from Guangzhou Institute of Science and Technology participated in this study. The research results show that students at Guangzhou Institute of Science and Technology have a great extent of engagement and a high skill level in both on-campus and off-campus table tennis activities. It was also found out that when grouped by gender, female players have higher levels of cognitive, affective, and skill than male. Moreover, a significant relationship exists between the extent of engagement in on-campus and off-campus table tennis matches and students’ level of competence where the greater the participants’ extent of engagement along cognitive, affective, and behavioral engagement in on-campus table tennis matches, the higher is their level of knowledge, skills and attitude. From the results, this study proposes suggestions and strategies to address the specific problems and challenges encountered by the participants during table tennis engagement such as teachers may consider innovating their strategies in teaching, providing more interesting ways to arouse and strengthen students’ cognitive, affective, behavioral in table tennis. Moreover, it is recommended that students join the school’s table tennis club or participate in off campus table tennis training courses, which can help improve their personal table tennis skills comprehensively.
