ABSTRACT
This study aimed to determine the relationship between the levels of resilience and academic competence among freshman college students at Guangdong University of Petrochemical Technology and to propose measures to strengthen these areas. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative techniques. A total of 240 freshmen from various departments were randomly selected to participate in a questionnaire survey that assessed their resilience and academic competence, while qualitative methods were used to further explore the challenges influencing these variables. The findings revealed that both resilience and academic competence were at a moderate level among the participants. The results also showed a significant positive correlation between students’ resilience and their academic competence, indicating that improvements in one area were associated with gains in the other. Insights from the qualitative data highlighted specific difficulties experienced by students, which informed the development of a targeted action plan to enhance these competencies. These results emphasize the importance of strengthening support systems and developmental programs to improve students’ resilience and academic competence, thereby contributing to the continued educational growth and institutional advancement of the university.
