ABSTRACT
The study aimed to determine the relationship between the participants’ level of resilience and academic competence among college students at Guangdong University of Science and Technology. Resilience, defined as the ability to bounce back or adapt in the face of adversity, trauma, misfortune, or change, is crucial for students to navigate academic pressures and achieve success. Academic competence encompasses the efficient and effective response to educational demands, including learning strategies and self-regulation abilities. The study employed quantitative research design, utilizing questionnaires to gather data from participants. The results indicated a strong correlation between high resilience and better mental health, which in turn enhances academic competence. The study also highlighted specific challenges faced by students in China, such as high academic pressure, a rote learning culture, narrow definitions of success, disparities in educational resources, and mental health concerns. The research underscored the importance of fostering resilience pillars such as self-awareness, mindfulness, self-care, positive relationships, and self-purpose to improve students’ academic performance and overall well-being. By enhancing these aspects, students can better cope with academic challenges and achieve greater success in their future careers.
