ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the relationship between college students’ happiness and physical health, as well as between their happiness and physical fitness. Mixed research approach through descriptive-correlational design and thematic analysis was used. A survey on happiness and tests on physical health and fitness involving with 730 first-year college students Zhaoqing University in Zhaoqing City, Guangdong Province, China were used to collect the data, which were analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient/t test for r. Results of the descriptive analysis showed that the participants’ level of happiness is high; and their level of physical health in terms of BMI is marked by healthy weight, in terms of body fat is normal, and in terms of blood pressure is normal. Also, their level of physical fitness speed is average, along power is very good, along agility is average, and along balance is average. Moreover, there exists a significant correlation between the participants’ level of happiness and level of physical health in terms of blood pressure. The problems and challenges encountered by the participants in relation to their happiness include psychological stress, social relationship problems, and self-perception bias. Concerning their physical health, they face such issues as unhealthy lifestyle habits, mental stress, and neglect of health management. Moreover, their physical fitness is affected by their sedentary lifestyle, such as sitting in the classroom, library, or dormitory for a long time to study. Considering the study’s salient findings, the researcher designed a plan of action to enhance students’ level of happiness, physical health, and physical fitness.
