ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the relationship between the extent of engagement in badminton among students of the Physical Education Department at Hunan Technical College of Railway High-Speed and their levels of mental health and badminton skills. Using a mixed-methods approach, data was collected through surveys and open-ended questions. The findings revealed that students demonstrated a very high level of engagement across cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions. Their mental health attributes, commitment, confidence, challenge, and control—were also rated as very high. In terms of performance, both basic and advanced badminton skills were assessed as very good, with advanced skills receiving slightly higher ratings. Statistical analyses indicated significant positive relationships between students’ engagement in badminton and their levels of mental health and badminton skills, underscoring the impact of sports participation on psychological well-being and technical proficiency. While no significant differences in engagement and mental health were found across gender and age groups, significant differences were observed across programs of study. Challenges reported included physical fatigue, difficulties in skill development, and time management issues. These insights informed the creation of a comprehensive plan of action to enhance student engagement, mental health, and skill acquisition.
