ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the influence of college students’ learning characteristics on their mathematics learning behavior. A mixed research approach was utilized. A total of 234 students were randomly selected from six different majors in the Applied Mathematics course at Guangzhou Railway Vocational and Technical College. A descriptive correlation research design was used to quantitatively analyze the survey data. The research results indicate that learner characteristics and learning behaviors play an important role in applied mathematics learning. Students’ learning strategies, metacognition, spatial orientation, learning attitude, learning motivation, and self-efficacy have a significant positive impact on academic performance. Investment, persistence, focus, interaction, and flexibility in learning behavior are also significantly positively correlated with academic performance in applied mathematics. Students actively participating in classroom interaction, persisting in learning, paying attention to learning content, interacting with classmates and teachers, and responding flexibly to learning challenges help improve academic performance. Additionally, the survey revealed issues such as weak learning foundations, difficulties in conceptual abstraction, learning anxiety, and the need to improve learning strategies among students. Based on the analysis of learner characteristics and learning behaviors, an action plan for applied mathematics teaching was developed according to students’ needs, providing learning support and guidance and improving learning strategies.
