ABSTRACT

This study aimed to assess the Summer 2024 Work and Travel Program of St. Paul University Philippines using a mixed-methods research approach. Data were gathered through a survey questionnaire administered to twelve (12) students who participated in the program. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative responses were examined through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that the participants assessed the objectives of the Work and Travel Program as being met to a very great extent. The students reported significant benefits from the program, including enhanced personal development, increased self-confidence, and improved English communication skills. Moreover, the program provided valuable opportunities for cultural immersion and practical work experience relevant to the fields of Tourism, Hospitality, and Business Administration. Despite the overall positive assessment, participants also encountered several challenges before, during, and after the program. These challenges included difficulties in preparing required documents, experiences of culture shock, adjustment to a new work and living environment, and challenges in reintegrating into student life after returning from the cultural exchange experience. In response to these challenges, the participants recommended that the University provide a more intensive pre-departure orientation to better prepare future participants for the demands and expectations of the Work and Travel Program in the United States.
